GSM (grams per square meter) measures paper weight and thickness — the higher the GSM, the heavier and more rigid the sheet. It's the international standard for specifying paper stock, while the US market more often uses pound (lb) weight for the same purpose, which is why GSM-to-lbs conversion is a common need.
