A4 vs Letter, the classic collision: A4 is ~6 mm narrower and ~18 mm taller than Letter. A file built for one clips or floats on the other — design with generous margins if a document must print in both worlds. And for design software: 1 inch = 72 points, so A4 = 595 × 842 pt, Letter = 612 × 792 pt.
How to choose the right paper size
ISO A-series (international)
One aspect ratio (1:√2) all the way down — each size is exactly half the previous, so layouts scale between sizes without redesign. A4 for documents, A3 for menus and small posters, A2–A0 as things get big.
North American sizes
Letter for documents, Legal for contracts, Tabloid for newsletters and posters. Proportions vary between sizes, so scaling between them needs layout adjustment.
Custom sizes
Sometimes the design demands it — but custom sizes usually cost more per piece than the nearest standard sheet. Check the tool's closest-standard hint before committing.
Don't forget bleed
Whatever the final size, artwork that touches the edge needs bleed beyond it — commonly 3 mm / 0.125 in per side. Build the file at final size plus bleed.
Paper size FAQs
What size is A4 in inches?
8.27 × 11.69 inches (210 × 297 mm) — slightly narrower and taller than US Letter.
What is the difference between A4 and Letter?
A4 is ~6 mm narrower and ~18 mm taller than Letter (216 × 279 mm). Files designed for one clip or float on the other — keep generous margins for documents that print in both markets.
What is the difference between ISO and North American sizes?
ISO A-sizes share one aspect ratio (1:√2), each exactly half the previous. North American sizes have varying proportions and don't halve cleanly into each other.
How many points are in an inch?
72 — the PostScript standard design software uses. A4 = 595 × 842 pt; Letter = 612 × 792 pt.
Can I convert custom dimensions?
Yes — choose Custom, enter width and height in any unit, and get all units plus the closest standard size.
Why does the right paper size matter?
Wrong-size files get scaled or cropped at print time — shifting layouts and cutting bleed. Build at exact final size, with bleed added.
