What eats your photobook margin

What eats your photobook margin

Three costs most shops underestimate when they price a photobook.

1

Print + binding

Your print partner's quote or your own press cost, cover and binding included. Bigger formats and lay-flat pages move it most.

2

Shipping and fees

Rigid mailers, postage you absorb, and the 3–4% that payments and your platform take from every order.

3

Fixed monthly costs

Apps, software, ads and design time. They decide how many books you must sell before you make anything.

The fastest margin lever is usually the upsell, not the base price: extra pages, a premium cover or a gift box. Photobook Designer lets customers add these while they design, right when the book feels personal. Run the what-ifs in the full breakdown to see what each one is worth to you.

Photobook profit FAQs

How do I calculate the profit on a photobook?

Take your selling price and subtract print and binding, the shipping you absorb, and payment and platform fees. Add the average profit from upsells. That's profit per order. Multiply by monthly orders and subtract fixed costs to get monthly profit.

How much should I charge for a photobook?

Work back from your cost and the margin you want. At a 50% target margin with 3.5% fees, a book that costs $20 to print and $6 to ship needs a price of about $56. The full breakdown builds this price ladder for every size.

What is a good profit margin for photobooks?

There's no single right number. It depends on your print costs and how you sell. Many shops price so the book covers its costs comfortably and let upsells add the profit. Use the target margin field to test what different margins do to your price.

Where do the starting numbers come from?

They're starting values for a 20-page hardcover so the calculator isn't empty. They aren't a quote from us or a market average. Replace them with your own print quote, prices and order volume.

How is the 12-month forecast calculated?

Your monthly orders are spread across the year with a typical photo-gift pattern: quieter in January, a lift around Mother's Day and graduations, and a peak in November and December. Each month's profit is orders times profit per order, minus fixed costs.
