There’s no single “standard” business card size worldwide, but certain sizes come up again and again for a reason. Here’s what to reach for, by region and use case, before you default to guessing.

Why US and European card sizes aren’t interchangeable

A US 3.5x2 inch card and a European 85x55 mm card look nearly identical on screen, but the difference, about 3.4 mm in width and 1.8 mm in height, is enough that a card designed for one size prints with visibly uneven margins in a case or wallet made for the other. If you sell into multiple regions, keep separate print files per region rather than scaling one file to fit; scaling shifts your bleed and safe zone out of position instead of just resizing the trim. Rounded corners add their own setup step, since the corner radius, usually 3 to 6 mm, needs to sit inside your bleed, not cut through it, or the rounding will clip live content.

How much bleed do I need on a business card?

0.125 inches (3 mm) is standard on every edge for a US card; keep the same 3 mm allowance for a European card. Anything meant to touch the edge, like a background color or image, needs to extend into that bleed area.

How far from the edge should text be?

At least 0.125 inches (3 mm) inside the trim line, the safe zone, so nothing gets clipped by a slightly imprecise cut. Round-cornered cards need extra margin near the corners specifically.

Can I use a US-sized card design for a European print run?

Not by simply scaling it. Rebuild the file at the correct European trim size, 85x55 mm, with its own bleed and safe zone, or the proportions and margins will look off on the finished card.
